INTENSE PULSED LIGHTING
(IPL)

What is an IPL PhotoFacial?

In an IPL photo facial, the light intentionally damages the skin’s red blood cells and pigmentation. The damaged pigmentation or melanin penetrates the skin, and the damaged red blood cells stimulate blood flow to the targeted area to increase melanin absorption. In doing so, the skin achieves a uniform and smoother look.

Lumecca IPL skin rejuvenation works well on nearly every area of your body. The most effective results are achieved in treatment sites that are more exposed to UV rays, including the face, neck, hands, legs, décolletage, and arms. Furthermore, unlike many other intense pulse light devices that may require as many as six to eight treatments to deliver visible results, with Lumecca IPL, you can achieve deeper, more pervasive, and natural-looking outcomes in just one to two sessions.

What can an IPL photofacial treat?

Skin conditions like the ones mentioned above often develop due to excess exposure to the sun, general aging,
and active lifestyles. Typically, the chest, shoulders, face, back of the hands, and neck are exposed to the
damaging effects of sunlight. IPL photofacial BroadBand Light can treat the following conditions:

Why IPL?

Targeted Skin Concerns

Want younger-looking, smoother skin without any downtime? Consider IPL Photofacials.

BENEFITS OF IPL

SKIN TONE CORRECTION

IPL reduces age spots, sun damage, and pigmentation irregularities, revealing a clearer, more radiant complexion.

ACNE TREATMENT

Light energy targets acne-causing bacteria, calming inflammation and minimizing breakouts for smoother, healthier-looking skin.

REDUCTION OF SPIDER VEINS AND CAPPILARIES

IPL safely fades broken capillaries and spider veins, improving skin clarity without harming surrounding tissue.

COLLAGEN PRODUCTION

By stimulating collagen, IPL enhances firmness and elasticity, softening fine lines for a youthful glow.

HAIR REDUCTION

IPL disrupts hair growth at the follicle, leading to long-term reduction and softer, smoother skin.

HOW IS IPL DIFFERENT FROM
LASER RESURFACING?

While both IPL and lasers utilize light energy to rejuvenate the skin and remove imperfections, these treatments use different forms of light and have different
effects on the skin.

Intense Pulsed Lighting

  • Uses broad-spectrum light to target pigment, redness, and vascular concerns.

  • Best for sun damage, age spots, freckles, rosacea, and overall skin tone.

  • Gentle treatment with minimal downtime.

  • Stimulates collagen for improved skin texture over time.

  • Often performed in a series of sessions for gradual, natural results.

Laser Resurfacing

  • Uses a focused laser beam to remove outer skin layers and resurface deeply.

  • Best for deep wrinkles, significant sun damage, scars, and uneven texture.

  • More intensive with longer downtime compared to IPL.

  • Promotes collagen remodeling for dramatic skin rejuvenation.

  • Usually requires fewer treatments, but results are more aggressive and transformative.

Intense Pulse Light Therapy Process

During the Procedure

IPL therapy sessions are typically straightforward and quick, lasting about 20-30 minutes depending on the area being treated. The skin is cleaned, and if necessary, a topical numbing cream may be applied to minimize discomfort during the treatment. You’ll be provided with eye protection to wear throughout the procedure to shield your eyes from the bright flashes of light. A handheld device that emits broad-spectrum light is pressed against the skin. The device delivers precise light pulses that penetrate the skin and target specific concerns like pigmentation, veins, or hair. During the treatment, you may feel a snapping sensation against the skin, similar to the snap of a rubber band. Most modern IPL devices include cooling features to help soothe the skin and reduce discomfort.

After the Procedure

It’s common to experience some redness and swelling similar to a mild sunburn. These effects usually subside within a few hours to a few days. You’ll be advised to avoid direct sunlight and to use sunscreen to protect the treated areas. Avoiding hot showers, saunas, and strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours is also recommended to prevent irritation. Gentle skincare products are recommended post-treatment. Avoid using abrasive or exfoliating products until the skin has fully healed.

Results of the Procedure

Visible changes are often noticeable after the first session, but the full results typically manifest after a series of treatments, generally 3 to 6 sessions, spaced about a month apart. You can expect a gradual decrease in visible skin imperfections such as sun spots, fine lines, and redness. Skin texture and tone may also improve as a result of increased collagen production. The results of intense pulse light therapy can last for several months or longer, depending on the individual’s skin condition and lifestyle. Maintenance sessions may be recommended to extend the effects of the treatment.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY OF AN IPL PHOTOFACIAL TREATMENT

On the day of your IPL PhotoFacial in the San Ramon at MedLounge MedSpa, you will be welcomed by our experienced staff. Once you are checked in and comfortably settled in the treatment room, the treatment plan will be shared again to ensure you agree and do not have any last-minute questions or concerns.

Finally, the treatment will begin with the provider first applying a cool gel to your face. You will be offered dark glasses to protect your eyes from the light. Then, our trained Lumecca IPL treatment expert will focus the device on the affected areas of your skin. The intense pulses of light will feel like the mild snapping of an elastic band on your skin. Minor warming and redness on the skin may occur after the treatment, which will quickly resolve. Over the next one to two days, you may notice the pigmentation becoming darker, and in the following week, the unwanted lesions will begin to flake off.
A more radiant and even-looking skin will reveal itself. Vascular lesions will also be treated similarly, and the unsightly veins will close and disappear on their own within a few days. The procedure involves no cuts, incisions, or needles, and you can return to your normal routine the same day or the next day after your treatment.

IPL PHOTOFACIAL RECOVERY

IPL photo facials do not have significant recovery
downtime. You might feel minor redness and
discomfort, but it should all fade away within a week.
Patients should expect to resume their regular daily
activities immediately after treatment, with an added
focus on a sun protection regimen.
